Emen

At the start of 2022, researchers discovered a delightful new addition to the Suaq orangutan family: baby Emen, seen clinging to his mother Ellie. Though initially tiny, Emen quickly showed signs of alertness and strength. Over the past couple of years, we have had the pleasure of observing Emen grow and develop, witnessing his blossoming confidence as he daringly swings upside down in the trees while his mother enjoys nearby fruit.
Emen still cherishes the closeness of his mother, and Ellie is more than happy to carry him wherever they go. This strong bond is evident as they traverse the forest together. Emen has begun to experiment with trying different fruits and leaves, often making amusing faces as juice drips down his chin whilst he chews on a ripe fruit. His explorative nature is endearing and provides a glimpse into his growing curiosity about the world around him.
Keen to learn, Emen attentively watches Ellie as she uses stick tools to poke into insect nests. His fascination with these skills suggests it won’t be long before he attempts them himself. This eagerness to observe and learn is a promising sign of Emen’s future capabilities.
As Emen continues to grow, we look forward to documenting his journey. His playful antics, coupled with his keen interest in acquiring new skills, make him a fascinating subject in our ongoing study of orangutan behaviour. Through Emen, we gain valuable insights into the early developmental stages of wild orangutans, enriching our understanding of these magnificent creatures.
